new season, new subjects?

Has anyone else noticed that my photos are tending almost exclusively toward birds, flowers, horses, cats, or trees? Have those always been my chief subjects or is this a new trend? Either way, I'm just now starting to pick up on it. This post will contain some of just about each, plus a little extra. :)

Hummingbird traffic in our yard is at an all-time high right now. I'm loving it. My guess is that the females are building up energy for nesting, since they're constantly at my sugar-water feeder despite all the males' attempts to deter them. Hummingbirds are so selfish and so mean to each other, but it's very entertaining to watch--and photograph, if you're quick enough, which I'm usually not.

Amazingly enough, four hummingbirds were sharing the feeder at the same time--ever so briefly!
Above: A female rufous hummingbird in "threat" pose to incoming hummingbirds.
Below: A male calliope hummingbird's throat is rosy-purple only if the lighting is just right.

No, hummingbirds weren't the only thing I took pictures of in the last week. My two mountains both had a streak of clouds about them the other morning on my walk.

It's May at last, and my world is finally turning green! I love green!!
Such a colorful day looking out on the Simcoe Mountains and Jackknife Butte!
Would you believe this is the same lamb (Theoden) that I posted a picture of in my April 2nd post? He's huge! And, of course, my blog post just wouldn't be complete without a kitty picture!

Oreo and Rusty are two of Drem's stablemates. We sometimes call Oreo "Shelob," the name of the nasty spider in Lord of the Rings, because of her bad temperament.

And last but not least, my beautiful horse, Drem. She and I aren't on the best of terms at the moment, however. I've been doing extensive ground training with her and can now lead her, stand her, groom her, saddle her, and pick her hooves without using a halter or lead rope. But as soon as I'm on her back, she has a total 180-degree personality change! Anyone have any suggestions?!

  6. Hi Hallie!

Thanks for the info on the lenses you use! Nikon cameras are awesome, huh? :)

I've actually been thinking about the 55-200mm and also the 50mm f/1.8 (they're so different!)... But I think I should adjust to my camera before I invest in another lens. haha ;) I guess that gives me more time to decide...

Congrats on being a finalist in the photography contest! I voted for your picture. It's definitely the best of the three, imho! :)
